extraordinary pain. jovan belcher was a linebacker for the kansas city chiefs, got there on his own, he wasn't drafted. recently celebrating his first child, a baby girl. this weekend, tragedy. belcher killing his girlfriend and killing himself at the stadium in friend of his coach and general manager. sorrow on the field today. the teammates leading the fans in a moment of silence. and some questions for the coach. were there any signs this was coming? john schriffen in kansas city tonight. >> reporter: with heavy hearts, the players took the field one day after teammate jovan belcher killed his girlfriend before taking his own life outside the stadium. >> it's tough. you miss him. he was a great guy. a great teammate who loved his family. and my heart goes out to them. our prayers are with them. >> reporter: as part of a pregame ceremony, they observed a moment of silence for victims of domestic abuse.

after running back peyton hillis scored the game's first touchdown, he ran over to coach romeo crennel to give him a hug. police say early saturday morning, belcher shot and killed his 22-year-old girlfriend, kasandra perkins, the mother of his daughter at their home. he then got in his car and drove to the facility at arrow head stadium where he thanked coaches for believing in him. moments later, he walked away, shooting himself in the head as the coach and general manager looked on in horror. police are trying to figure out what caused him to snap. he and his girlfriend were arguing after she returned late from a concert. >> it was an individual that did something that he snapped. that, i don't understand and i probably never will. >> reporter: it's the latest in a string of nfl player suicides. earlier this year, ray

ester ling took his life with a gun. so did titans player murdock. in may, junior seau died after shooting himself in fact the chest. the family is having his brain studied. they want know if the suicide is associated to a history of concussion-related injuries. but the chief's manager said that he does sflot a history of injuries. >> he is a player that doesn't have a history of concussions. >> reporter: with belcher's jersey still hanging in his locker, his teammates say he will not be forgotten. the team announced it will start a foundation for belcher's 3-month-old daughter left behind. as for what happened on the field? the chiefs played the best game of the season, beating the carolina panthers, earning their second win of the year. david? >> coming together. john, thanks to you. the developing story this evening. much of the northwest is getting battered this sunday by three fierce storms in a row with another on the way tonight. heavy rain flooding the streets

of sacramento, crashing trees on to cars in san francisco and blowing a rig over on a bridge. cecilia vega reports live tonight. >> reporter: good evening. this is a storm that slammed the west coast from washington down to the san francisco bay. just take a look at this. the beautiful napa valley tonight has vineyards under water. it was a one, two, three punch. three storms in less than one week plowing down on the west coast, the latest today dropping up to an inch of rain an hour in some spots. in reno, nevada, wind gusts reported to hit 95 miles an hour. nearly 100,000 people without power. homes flooded, roofs smashed and cars under water. rig toppled over. and temporarily closing this bridge, a crucial artery across

the san francisco bay. >> be prepared. >> reporter: across northern california, swollen rivers threaten to flood cities like napa where sandbags are passed out and countless trees came crashing down. we saw this one fall before our eyes. how close did it come to you? >> within feet of my truck. >> reporter: we were driving down this highway in napa and this tree came crashing down in front of us. i want to show you how huge this tree is. take a look. a giant tree. i mean, the roots of this thing are four feet tall. now, there may be another storm later in the week after so much headache already. even santa in one city was forced to take refuge. one bright spot we saw in a gloomy day here in napa. when the tree fell down, the drivers kept pulling over to help clear it out of the roadway. after the man who was almost hit by it, he says he is headed tout buy a lottery ticket. >> thank you. and cecilia called the newsroom when that tree fell. right in front of the car today. glad she is okay too. ginger zee on the set tonight. these totals are staggering. >> they are. we expected a five day total

to reach some where from 15 to 20 inches and it did. look at this. petrolia, california, 17.5 inches. other spots in northern california, 14. o'brien, oregon, just over a foot. it's not quite done as far as the flooding. because the rain stopped, you can have rivers swell. flood watches and warnings still in place through tomorrow. still another inch of two, doesn't have the bite but not something they need. >> bad timing, the fourth storm. another major headline tonight, the record warmth. >> houston and dallas, record highs today, and again tomorrow. atlanta and memphis a touch of a record high. they will be able about one degree short of it. the warmth sticks around for the start of the week. >> ginger zee, thank you. we are going to turn now to the deadly bus crash at the miami airport. tonight, we learn about the driver who never intended to be at the airport at all. his wrong turn proving to be deadly. getting lost and missing signs

warning of a low clearance ahead. the unfolding investigation tonight. >> very bloody. everybody had cuts. >> reporter: crews rushed to rescue dozens trapped in the bus moments after a bus plowed into a thick concrete overpass at miami international airport. the force of the impact ripped apart the front of the bus. >> the person didn't know where he was going. >> reporter: firefighters brought out the jaws of life to cut into the metal. more than 30 hurt, including two died. >> we had three people critically injured. >> reporter: across the nation, the industry is under fire. more than 200 fatal bus crushes. every year. 12,000 nonfatal crashes and 15,000 injuries every year. in august, one died and more than 30 injured when a mega bus slammed into a concrete bridge between chicago and st. louis. in july, a tour bus returning from a casino crashed into a highway barrier in new york injuring all 23 people on board.

the passengers in the latest crash were headed for a jehovah's witness conference and the driver some how got lost and ended up at the airport. the next mistake, driving past this sign, demanding all tall vehicles turn around. >> we're not sure why he misjudged the approach to the terminal building. >> reporter: police have not charged the drive interand said they still could. company he works for did not return our calls. >> thanks to you. another disaster overseas? japan where outside tokyo, cars were passing through a three-mile-long tunnel when the ceiling began to cave in, trapping drivers inside. tonight, they are searching through the tunnel. >> reporter: grainy surveillance video inside the tunnel show the frantic efforts to save those trapped. japanese police say these large concrete ceiling panels, as many as 150, came crashing down

sparking a fire on this major highway connecting tokyo to central japan. witnesses describe a scene of chaos as people ran to safety. flames and smoke billowing through the three mile long tunnel. one truck driver, trapped under the rubble, called for help, but there was so much smoke, firefighters had to halt rescue efforts, fearing another collapse. late sunday, rescue crews pulled the charred remains of several bodies, including the truck driver. investigators are looking into what caused the panels to collapse, but say the tunnel had just passed a routine inspection in september. atika fujita, abc news, tokyo. >> thank you. now to afghanistan tonight where taliban suicide bombers launched a deadly attack on a u.s. military base. two vehicles packed with explosives slammed into the front gate of the jalalabad air

base in the eastern part of the country. a fierce gun battled broke out lasting for hours. five afghans working at the base were killed. american helicopters firing down, no americans were killed. a fierce battle to avoid the fiscal cliff took a new turn today. treasury secretary tim geithner making a bold prediction that the republicans will go along with a tax hike for the healthy. but it certainly didn't sound that way on the other side. what is at stake for the average american family? with 30 days to go until the deadline? david kerley at the white house tonight. >> reporter: president obama and his white house team appear confident with the stronger hand in talks with house republicans, demanding and believing tax rates for the wealthy are going up. >> there is no responsible way we can govern the country with those low rates in place for future generations. those rates are going to have to go up. >> i was flabbergasted. i look at him and i said, you can't be serious. >> reporter: the two sides are seriously far apart. the president wants $1.6 billion

in new tax revenue over ten years. the speaker wants half that. the president wants spending cuts, $600 billion. to medicare and other programs. not enough, says the speaker. >> if we gave the president 1.6 trillion of more money, what do you think he is going to do with it? he is going to spend it. that is what washington does. >> they have to come to us and tell us what they need. what we can't do is to keep guessing. >> so the ball is in their court? >> absolutely. and they understand that. >> reporter: the good news, it appears the mortgage reduction is not part of the talks. so if they don't make a deal and if we do go over the fiscal cliff what does it mean for you. nearly everybody american will pay more taxes, between 2,000 and $2,400 per family. we enjoyed a 2% cut in payroll taxes. that will disappear. and the government will start cutting, $500 billion in spending, half at the pentagon and the other half from federal spending for education, transportation and food safety and research.

all of that could send all of us back into recession. where do the talks stand? boehner says they are nowhere. and the speaker has a description for the president's negotiation style. he says it's roll over and do what i say. not a good sign with 30 days until the cliff. >> david, thank you. now to a surveillance tape causing real concern this evening. and the race against time for an 11-year-old girl suffering from leukemia. her parents caught on tape, appearing to sneak her out of a hospital in phoenix. doctors the fear her life is at risk and the search is on. >> reporter: these are the last images captured on a surveillance camera of an 11-year-old cancer patient moments before her mother snuck her out of the hospital without doctors knowing. officials say her life could be in danger. the fbi is now involved, helping police track down this family, possibly in mexico.

>> if the kid's life is in danger, the parent cannot interfere with the rendering of treatment because it could be child neglect or endangerment. >> reporter: watch as emily, a leukemia patient, follows her mother into a hospital wednesday. both exit the bathroom and walk out of the hospital. emily is seen wearing a wig. her father drives them away in a black ford minivan. emily was scheduled to be released the following day. but instead, the mother removed the iv from her chest catheter, which doctors fear could lead to infection. >> she does not have the seal from staff. we understand it's likely she could get an infection and die within a couple days. >> reporter: police canvassing parts of arizona, california and mexico trying to find them. they say if anything happening to young emily, her parents could face charges. >> thanks tonight. more ahead on "world news."
